School Choice Is Surging Nationwide—Louisiana Shouldn’t Be Left Behind
Across the country, one trend is becoming impossible to ignore: school choice is on the march.
A recent Fox News segment highlights what many parents already feel on the ground. More families are exploring alternatives to traditional public schools, and that shift is forcing the education system to respond. As the segment notes, public schools are increasingly competing for students as parents opt out in search of better options.
This isn’t happening in just one state. It is a nationwide movement.
From Texas to Florida, policymakers are expanding school choice programs at a rapid pace. In Texas alone, demand for new programs has surged, with tens of thousands of families applying almost immediately after launch. These numbers tell a simple story: when families are given options, they take them.
At its core, school choice is about empowering parents. Whether through charter schools, education savings accounts, or scholarship programs, the idea is the same. Funding follows the student, not the system.
And when that happens, everyone benefits.
Research and real-world experience show that increased competition can push schools to improve, expand opportunities for students, and better meet individual needs. Families gain flexibility, and education becomes more responsive rather than one-size-fits-all.
But here is the key question: where does Louisiana stand?
While other states are aggressively expanding access to education savings accounts and similar programs, Louisiana risks falling behind if it does not act decisively. The Legislature has an opportunity right now to align with this national momentum by fully funding and implementing the GATOR program.
The GATOR program represents exactly the kind of forward-thinking policy that matches what families are asking for. It would give parents the ability to direct education dollars toward tuition, tutoring, special needs services, or other customized learning solutions that fit their child.
This is not a radical idea anymore. It is rapidly becoming the norm.
The momentum is clear. Parents are demanding more control. States are responding. And the results are reshaping education across the country.
Louisiana should not sit on the sidelines.
If lawmakers want to support families, strengthen education outcomes, and keep pace with national trends, the path forward is obvious. Fund the GATOR program, expand school choice, and give Louisiana students the opportunities they deserve.
