When AFT Says Quality Care, It Means Union Care

Proposed Resolution 22 addresses AFT’s trauma counseling benefit. The union complains that the benefit is managed through a third-party agency using outside therapists and artificial intelligence services, even though licensed therapists and mental health professionals belong to AFT.

The resolution calls for union-represented trauma specialists to help define standards and for members to be educated about opportunities to serve as providers. It is a neat example of how quickly AFT can turn a member benefit into an organizing opportunity.

A trauma program should have one priority: getting a member to the best qualified, most available provider at a reasonable cost. Union status should not move anyone to the front of the line. A counselor does not become more clinically effective because the union receives dues from the counselor’s paycheck.

AFT raises fair questions about standards of care, evidence-based treatment, vendor transparency, and the use of AI. Those questions should be answered through clinical qualifications and measurable outcomes. Instead, the resolution repeatedly emphasizes that outside reimbursement is higher than what some AFT healthcare professionals receive and that union members could provide the services themselves.

There it is. The union’s concern is not only who receives care. It is who gets paid to provide it.

This is the same organization that routinely warns about profit motives and conflicts of interest in healthcare. Yet when its own members might capture more of the spending, steering business toward an affiliated workforce suddenly becomes a virtue.

AFT members seeking help after assault, domestic violence, a disaster, or workplace trauma deserve a provider chosen for competence, availability, fit, and results. They should not become captive customers in an internal union marketplace.

If AFT wants to prove union providers are better, measure the outcomes and let members choose. A union card is not a medical credential.
